Tell us a bit about yourself

I didn’t appreciate it at the time, but I was lucky enough to be born in the sunny Caribbean and spent my childhood growing up in several islands. These islands included St. Croix, St Lucia and Puerto Rico. I later moved to Canada and then moved to London after university. Some of my best friends say I’ve done well to hold onto my Canadian accent. Unlike some American celebrities who put on fake English accents I’m very proud of my roots and would not have it any other way.

There’s no technology that could ever compete with one’s creative spirit and ability to see the world.

After moving to England, I did a series of jobs until I settled in the software industry. The work was rewarding and gave me an opportunity to travel the world. However, despite all of the positives, moving into the video production business had been itching away at me. It was a dream I had when I was a child so I decided to roll the dice a few years back. People often say ‘Don’t live a life full of regrets' and this is exactly how I’m living my life right now.

At times, some may confuse me for daydreaming, but I’m always processing and dreaming up new ways to do things. I’ve always seen the world through a creative eye. This is the beauty of life and the power of imagination. There’s no technology that could ever compete with one’s creative spirit and ability to see the world.

In addition to running my production company, I’m an international keynote speaker. Also, I’ve written a book called ‘The Video Effect’ aimed inspiring brands and businesses to make better online video. I also work as a Digital Tutor at the General Assembly.

Pitch your business in a sentence

DevilBoy Productions specialises in producing video content with animation for businesses who want a big company experience on an affordable budget.

Give us a potted history of DevilBoy Productions

After working in the corporate sector for over ten years, my best friend gave me a well-deserved nudge to jump start the company. The company was founded over 5 years ago and was probably one of the toughest challenges that I have had. Moving to a new industry was seen as both brave by my closest friends and crazy.

A well-produced case study video is like a testimonial video on steroids.

DevilBoy Productions was initially focused on animation, but is now more closely focused on the art of cinematic filmmaking. We offer a range of services including videos suitable for corporate marketing, live events recording and bespoke motion graphics/animation. Core clients are in the corporate sector, but we have also worked in the fashion and travel industry. We have recently acquired a drone for aerial filmmaking and will be CAA certified this year to carry out work.

Depending on the scale of the brief, the company has access to a top level of ambitious creative talent and we strive to deliver on all briefs, whether that’s to your investors, clients or your customers.

What's the best thing about co-working?

Working with others who really can understand and appreciate where you are coming from. Most of us will know that all companies have their ups and downs and it’s great to be surrounded by like-minded people at Club Workspace Portobello who understand this.

Collaboration and co-working make for an incredible combination. Also, it’s always great meeting new faces.

What client work are you most proud of?

I’ll have to be completely honest here. Each client has brought its own unique challenges and I’ve enjoyed working with them all.

Have you ever sought outside funding?

No but it’s a future possibility

Where do you see your business in a year's time? In three years’ time?

In one year:

  • Acquiring new equipment and expertise
  • Addition of cinematic aerial videography using our recently acquired drone
  • Personally providing more keynote speeches on the subject of Video

In three years:

  • Submission of a short film into a festival such as Raindance, Cannes, or Sundance
  • Offering of video services to the travel industry
  • Personally write another book aimed at the travel industry

What's your growth strategy?

The two areas DevilBoy Productions will mostly focus on are:

  • Working further on market segmentation which the company can organise sales efforts around
  • Forming and leveraging partnerships to acquire new business

What trends are you seeing in your industry?

In terms of a particular type of video, case study videos are growing in the corporate sector. These types of video are great for businesses who want to demonstrate how a client is using their product or service. A well-produced case study video is like a testimonial video on steroids.

Using handheld cameras, slider shots and complex graphics, production companies are now able to incorporate a number of cinematic elements.

360-degree videos are still in their infancy, but the prospect of creating this new type of content is proving to be very exciting for early adopters. This is where video can be filmed entirely around you. When viewed on a phone, viewers can tilt the phone or viewing device to look at different angles. This particular type of video could be great for businesses looking to showcase a new space.

Who would you ask (dead or alive) to be a dream member on your board of directors?

It would be great to have George Lucas on deck. He created Star Wars at a time when everything had to be modelled. Despite advances in animation and film technology, the intricate amount of work that went into Star Wars at the time would have been incredible.

Collaboration and co-working make for an incredible combination.
