The Story of Mare Street Studios

The Story of Mare Street Studios

Set within one of London's fastest-growing and most exciting areas, Workspace welcomes its new Hackey-located building, Mare Street Studios, to its growing portfolio of spaces. Its doors are due to open in early 2020 to a swath of scene-setting professionals seeking out one of the most fashionable postcodes in London.

In the beating heart

Taking advantage one of London's most sought-after locations, Mare Street Studios is convieniently positioned on Mare Street itself (originally known as Merestret in the 15th Century), the road that runs though central Hackney and the historical and administrative heart of the borough.

Here, professionals make the most of its bustling creative scene, relaxed café lifestyle, and quirky feel as trendy warehouse convestions nestle in amoungst stunning period properties. This, and a strong sense of community, has created a forward-thinking borough brimming with talent.

In terms of transport connections, London Fields station is just a 4-minute walk away, with direct links to Liverpool Street in 7 minutes. It's just 5 miles north-east of Charing Cross, and within striking distance of East London's prime spots, such as Bethnal Green and Dalston.

Looking to the past

Once upon a time - 1873 to be exact - Mare Street Studios as we know it today was almost unrecognisable. However, an old map of the site shows that it has always been a hive of activity with an assortment of cobbled yard surfaces, outbuildings for workshops, stables and small-scale industrial activity.

After the Second World War - in which the building survived without any damage - the site was occupied by a large furniture factory. It is thought that the outbuildings were demolished at this point, leaving just the main building fronting onto Mare Street that we can see today.

What it's got to offer

Workspace has taken on the challenge of transforming the site into a modern business hub. Once complete, it will house an impressive 94 modern offices spread across four floors – a home for companies to settle and grow. The generous amount of natural light (proven to boost productivity and wellbeing at work) and stunning contemporary architecture have been designed with the intention to wow clients and prospective employees alike, with an on-site café serving up delicious hot drinks and treats throughout the day.

For more formal meetings, customers will be able to choose from two high-spec meeting rooms, or the many breakout zones will provide the perfect spot to grab a quick chat or mix up where they work.
