As LID Publishing, based at The Record Hall, welcome in their 25th year, we speak to Business Development Director Niki Mullin to find out how the thriving venture is raising a glass to a quarter-century.

Over the past 25 years, LID Publishing has made it their mission to bring thought-provoking business books, journals and magazines to entrepreneurs and business people across the globe – with over 2,500 esteemed authors, thought leaders and experts on the books.

"Our main focus is business books and business journals and magazines, so that's really our bread and butter if you like," says Niki. "But within that umbrella, it's quite broad. We publish books on self-help, marketing, finance and innovation – all aimed at business executives and business professionals who often lead very busy lives."

Founded in Madrid, and with its UK offices based at The Record Hall, nestled in the heart of Hatton Garden, the organisation spans seven countries: United States, United Kingdom, China, Spain, Mexico, Colombia and Argentina. And sights are set high to grow even further in coverage, with aims to put roots down in India next.

"Although we've only been in London for six years, we've been publishing books in Spain and throughout Latin America for 25 years," says Niki. "And we only see our London brand growing with time." This year, LID's London office has been a hub of activity. "It's a big year for us. We have lots of exciting initiatives going on throughout the year all over the world," says Niki.

In the Good Books

Indeed, in celebration of their landmark birthday, LID has signed a pledge with the National Literary Trust (NLT) to alleviate poverty levels among adults and children in the UK. "There are activities going on throughout the year in support of the charity. For example, we held a birthday party and raffle in March and invited a representative of the NLT to speak," says Niki. "What's more, it's their 25th anniversary too! So, we had plenty to celebrate and all money went to a good cause."

The publishers have also set up an 'honesty' library at The Record Hall – one of the many pop-up libraries dotted around the capital in support of the NLT. Niki says, "One of the NLT's initiatives is to help boost literacy levels and it's been great to see people making the most of our library at The Record Hall. You can see people reading our books in the café and you'll often see them on the tables. It's so nice."

From Then to Now

LID was one of the first companies to settle at the newly-developed The Record Hall. In fact, "We were shown around in hard hats, steel-toed boots and Hi Vis jackets!" says Niki, "It was a building site at that time, but we could see its potential." Now the company enjoys a sizable open-plan office on the second floor with walls flanked by large windows.

"It's ideal for us. We're in such a cool spot right by Leather Lane Market and we've got really great facilities downstairs including changing rooms and bike storage," says Niki. "Me and some of my colleagues cycle into work and shower here which is a great plus."

"This year has seen LID reach a landmark and it's great to have the flexibility of space to expand into as we grow in the coming years," says Niki.

3 Top Reads

With around 125 new titles published each year, LID has an inspiring selection of new reads for business professionals spanning all industries. Here are three of their top picks for 2018:

Purpose by Ben Renshaw

"This is one book I think everybody needs to read," says Niki. Aimed at business professionals and executives, Purpose sets out the steps to leading a more purposeful life – both personally and at work. Renshaw puts forth the idea that purpose-driven organisations will surpass organisations that don't ask the big 'why' questions.

Positive Nutrition by Kate Cook

Expert nutritionist Kate Cook brings a down-to-earth approach to eating well for those of us leading busy nine-to-five lives. "This is a great book on how to eat strategically in order to boost energy and empower healthy living. Highly recommended," says Niki.

The 'Concise Advice' Series

"These books provide really accessible, bite-sized chunks of information that busy people can read on the go," says Niki. "Each A5 moleskin-style book focuses on a different topic and offers practical solutions to everyday challenges facing both startups and established businesses."
