At its core, “Shiny Object Syndrome” is a disease of distraction, and it affects the highly motivated and bright sparks in our companies. Do you crave new technology and new developments? Are you excited about the latest AI, machine learning, IoT and blockchain technology and would rather be the early adopters than the laggards? It’s likely you aren’t afraid to start new projects and create new things.

Ordinarily, these are great characteristics, but when “Shiny Object Syndrome” sets in, it forces you to chase project after project, and change after change, never settling with one option and causing a maintenance and effort overload.

It’s called “Shiny Object Syndrome” because we are like small children chasing after shiny objects. Once we get there and see what the object is, we quickly lose interest and start chasing the next best thing. Rather than literal shiny objects, these may be business objectives, marketing strategies, new technologies or even other business ventures.
