At Workspace, we take a lot of pride in our buildings - we love their history and we make it our mission to make them the most exciting spaces to work from.
In recent years we’ve worked to redevelop all manner of buildings to support the development of New and Growing Companies across London: building Ladbroke Grove’s gleaming Grand Union Studios and revamping the Allen and Hanbury pharmaceutical factory – relaunching it as The Pill Box.
But that’s only the tip of the iceberg; this year sees the beginning of redevelopment projects on the old Royal Doulton artist studios, Southbank House, and The Leather Market, an original tannery dating back to 1879 drenched in character, a short walk from Borough and London Bridge stations.
For The Leather Market in particular, we’re working hard to create a space that’s worthy of our customers, with the help of architects BlueBottle and interior designers, Generate Studio.
The Leather Market is an estate, comprising a host of impressive buildings. One of which is Lafone House, where a new ground floor reception redevelopment scheme is being carried out. Separate to this, the majority of the estate is also being revamped with upgraded communal space and WC cores, futureproofing The Leather Market for New and Growing Companies in Southwark for years to come.
Fresh communal areas
Generate have been inspired to create fresh, new communal spaces that give our customers the freedom to break-out, collaborate and do their very best work; while a modern on-site café offers the perfect retreat for entrepreneurs, small businesses and professionals during breaks and lunchtimes.
The communal areas will be a hive of activity, with our customers and Club Workspace The Leather Market members able to network and interact at their convenience.
Calling on the building’s heritage
Our interior designers, Generate have been exceptionally clever in lending on The Leather Market’s period history, introducing black subway tiles and full height cubicles in the toilets, minimalistic linear lighting above a pared-back metal suspended ceiling in the hallways and pendant lighting with flashes of coloured cord throughout the communal areas.
Bringing the outside in
The work doesn’t finish there either: we’re also investing in the spectacular redevelopment of Lafone House, featuring floor-to-ceiling windows that wrap the building, encouraging abundant levels of natural daylight that is sure to heighten productivity and morale.
The entire redevelopment project at The Leather Market is already underway with a completion date set for Q1 2017. Building works will mean The Leather Market reception area has to relocate to blocks 1-5 for the remainder of the project.
Ideal transport links
The Leathermarket has always been in demand from New and Growing Companies in Southwark due to its proximity to major London transport hubs. London Bridge (Northern & Jubilee Line and mainline rail) and Borough tube station (Northern Line) are only a short walk away, with numerous bus routes also servicing the area.
